The Government drive to improve the performance of our buildings in the UK is no bad thing. We all need a pleasant and comfortable home and place of work which is economical to run. The growing issue of global warming has increased the focus on carbon dioxide emissions and this is the principle methodology adopted to measure the performance of our buildings.
Energy Performance Directive in buildings
EPDB is an EU Directive the UK Government signed up to in 2005. This directive has brought about a number of measures being introduced through the Building Regulations Approved document L1 the "Conservation of fuel and power" introduced in 2005 and is split into two sections for new dwellings and work in existing dwellings.
ADL1A for new dwellings introduced a new series of requirements.
- Dwelling Emission Rate < Target Emission Rate
- Maximum design limits for building fabric and services
- As built dwelling is consistent with design
- Requirement for air tightness or air permeability to be tested

- more stringent u-values
- SAP modelling to demonstrate Dwelling Emission Rates of notional and actual builds
- control fittings
